How to wear Scarves through the Seasons
When I work with a client during a Wardrobe Declutter I always find a sizeable box of scarves in a huge array of prints and textures. Some for summer, a few more for winter, with a mixture of casual and smarter uses. We love them for their upbeat prints and fabulous fabrics but often stick to one or two favourites to wear and then store the rest away. To wear scarves all year around plan your outfits, experimenting with the best scarf, and hang them together so they are ready to go.

Autumn.
With a chill in the air, scarves are the perfect neck warmer. Wear tied neatly at your neck under a shirt and jacket, or add colour and print to keep the summer alive.

Summer stripes over warmer layers.

A neck tie adds soft tones with denim and a Euro feel.

Monochrome spots add a lightness to leather.
Winter.
You need cosy, with colour and texture to add detail to darker coats and paler skins.

A large wrap scarf becomes part of your jacket secured by a belt.

For fuller busts, twist into a cowl for a cosy neckline.

Mix up textures and tones even with winter’s muted colours.
Spring.
Uplifting prints over lightweight knits will brighten your day and your outfit.

A large loose scarf knot adds a creative neck detail, no need for a coat

Tones of pink: large square wrapped back to front with a small knot.

Left long and draped: pop the colours, red and green.
Summer.
Delicate tones for summer days, lighter fabrics to add a willowy touch.

Summer meadow colours, yellow and soft greens.

Nautical blues and whites with a pop of red accessory.

One scarf, two ways. Animal print scarf tied at the front over stripes for daytime.

Tied to make an infinity scarf with knot at the back for an evening drape.
A few tips:
- Scarves are perfect to add that pop of colour, wear with simple tones for ample effect.
- If you are full busted, go long and lean or neat and high around your neck.
- If you are wearing high around your neck, ideally keep your hair pulled back or long and sleek
- A scarf will make a statement, so play down other accessories.
- Unless you love a very neat finish, don’t worry about tying with perfection, a loose knot adds creativity.
- Hang a dedicated scarf with an outfit to remind you to wear it.
- Print on print works surprisingly well, for example similar tones, but different sized prints.
- Try these novel bag ideas, wrapped and tied, different each time:

Add a print to your outfit, tied around your clutch

Twist and tie around a bag handle.

A long rectangle, wrapped and tied in place.
Find an obvious space to hang your decluttered favourite scarves
A rail inside your wardrobe door, a towel ladder by your dressing table, try Wayfair, even a dedicated scarf hanger, look at Lakeland or The Holding Company. Try not to overload it as you won’t see the individual designs and will soon forget your favourite options.
